Grace Lutheran Church (ELCA)
Our History

The corporate history of Grace Lutheran Church of Green Bay as a congregation servicing the Lord Jesus began on December 18, 1908. It was on that day that nineteen men and women signed the original constitution of the congregation bringing to fulfillment work that had begun more than a year before.

Louis F. Gast, a candidate of Theology from the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary at Columbus, Ohio, accepted the call as the congregation's first Pastor. He delivered his first sermon at Grace on Easter Sunday April 11, 1909. He continued to serve this congregation for 43 years.

The original church building was a former Baptist Church, purchased by congregation on March 21, 1910. The present Grace Lutheran Church building occupies the same site. A new House of Worship was built and dedicated on December 17, 1916. In 1936, the congregation voted to enlarge their church structure and a new and enlarged Grace Lutheran was rededicated in march 1938.

Gast Hall, the educational unit of our present church was dedicated on Sunday, September 16, 1956.

A renovation program making the facility accessible to the handicapped and adding the church lobby on the East end of the building was completed in 1984. Later, in 1989 a major renovation of the total facility was necessitated because of an arson fire. This was completed in June of 1990.

Dr Gast retired from the ministry on November 16, 1952, and on Movember 23 of the same year, the Reverand Dean A Kilgust was installed as the spiritual leader of the congregation, serving the congregation until July, 1987.

Today Grace Lutheran Church is a congregation of 2000 souls united together in service to the Lord Jesus Christ and the greater Green Bay Community.

Presently, the Reverand Richard Schmeling and the interim Pasor Reverand Chuck Fluegel and Reverend Ken Schlueter serve together in Pastoral Ministry. The Reverand Jerry Kuehn serves part time as Grace's visitation Pastor.
